The Minstrel’s Office

Part 1

I am not a trained musician. If I touch a piano, a guitar, or even drums, the most I can do is help a real musician move them to his car, or to the platform. I have always wanted to play an instrument, but never had the drive and discipline. Singing on the other hand… is even worse. The only time I sing is when I worship, and even that sometimes is hard to stand. Despite not ever being able to play an instrument, and not being the best singer, the Lord has really given me a heart for minstrels. To see musicians make the transition into the intimate quarters of our God and given a name, a grace and an assignment is something I see as an honor and a privilege. I truly believe that we are living in significant times. We are living in times where the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ is truly beginning to understand and step into our assignment here on planet Earth. We are seeing a significant transition in many different spheres: preaching is now no longer about homiletics and sermons, but about shifting the Heavens and opening regions. Giving is no longer about building projects but about displacing poverty in our communities. Praise and Worship is no longer bound in the sector of entertainment but is about exalting a Mighty God. With these shifts we are also seeing a shift within callings and anointings. People in the House of God are beginning to see their role in the advancement of the Kingdom of God. No longer can we allow ushering to be a part time job, there is an anointing of helps that must be present (1 Cor. 12:28). One of the major revelations that the Body of Christ is beginning to place a demand on, more and more, is in the area of music and musicians. For too long we have allowed the musicians to slip through the cracks of religion without finding destiny and purpose.. that day is OVER!!!

The Office of the Minstrel is a very unique calling, and it’s extremely important. This office encompasses many different aspects and areas. In the world today, they not only take on the identity of musicians, but music engineers, producers, and even music managers. What is a Minstrel? A minstrel is one who is skilled and anointed, one who is called to release the Sound of Heaven in the Earth. The minstrel’s office is closely related to that of the prophet. While the prophet releases what God is saying, the minstrels release what God is singing. The word “minstrel” in the Hebrew is “nagan“, and it literally means to “strike the string”, which gives us an understanding of warfare. The minstrel is a warrior. This is what David meant, when he said, “teach my hands to war, and my fingers to fight” (Psalm 144:1). Usually minstrels are prophets, but only a few prophets are minstrels. Minstrels are very valuable because it takes a certain level of skill to occupy that office. Minstrels must be skilled in their instrument and must be masters at their craft.

Sound is very important. Sound ushers in new movements. Sound is also a dimension of culture as well. Sound can usually help one identify what nation one belongs to. The minstrel helps to establish the culture of Heaven in the Earth in a very real way. I believe that we, like never before, need minstrels to raise up and understand their role in the Kingdom of God. Minstrels must see their job as an office and not a part-time gig. They must embrace the dimension of SONSHIP and no longer lock themselves into being hirelings. This shift must happen for the Body of Christ to move forward and there are a few things that we can do to see that happen.

The Spirit of David is being released like never before in our day. Where an unprecedented amount of Quality Leaders, MEGA GIFTS is what I call them, are being anointed for service. These leaders are preachers, businessmen, warriors and minstrels. Let us deal with minstrels in this presentation. Since minstrels are to release the Sound of Heaven, they themselves are instruments. They not only play instruments, but they become an INSTRUMENT for the sound and culture of God to manifest on Earth. Since they then are indeed instruments, it is very important that the instrument be tuned and pure.

Rom. 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

The minstrel must present his/her BODY as a living sacrifice. For so long we have settled for impure minstrels.. musicians that take smoke breaks, fornicators and homosexuals. This, we can no longer accept. As pastors and leaders of Houses we must demand more of our minstrels. They must be people of commitment and loyalty and not money and opportunity. Minstrels operate in what I call “The Order of David”, this is the pattern that David set up for worship and warfare. Minstrels have keys.

Is. 22:22 And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.

Minstrels have the grace to open the treasuries of God’s heart. They open places in the Heavens and release sounds never heard before. This is why minstrels must spend adequate time in the presence of the Lord. They must be very careful of their environments and surroundings (we will deal with this in depth in the next blog: Cultivating the Anointing). Minstrels are sound carriers, so this makes it very easy for them to retain what they hear, and what they are around. Lucifer was this type of being:

Ezek. 28:13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.

Lucifer, who is Satan before he fell from Heaven, was covered in jewels. Jewels not only reflect and refract light, but they also capture and release light. Lucifer would go into the presence of God, soak up the light and sound of God, and then go out among the congregation of the Mighty, and release this light and sound, which would cause all of Heaven to fall down and worship. Lucifer did his job so well, he began to think that the praises belonged to him. The minstrel’s job is to go into the heights of Heaven, through prayer, worship and fasting, through meditation and solitude, and then bring and release what they received. Minstrels must be very careful not to get caught up in the hype. While you are a vessel of God, you are not God.

2Chr. 5:13 It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the LORD;

2Chr. 5:14 So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of God.

It says in 2 Chronicles that the minstrels were as ONE. this deals with unity, not just with each other, but with the vision and purpose of the House. Minstrels must be careful to be in sync with the vision and purpose, with the sound of the House. This is why I believe that ideally a minstrel should be assigned to ONE house, and stay loyal to that house. Because if a minstrel is going to and from different houses, many times, sounds begin to blend, and the anointing of the minstrel drops. While the skill may increase, the anointing decreases because it is no longer concentrated in one particular place. The scripture also says that they made ONE SOUND.. they weren’t showboating, they weren’t trying to be the next best thing, their purpose was to present a unified sound so that the people could go into the presence of the Lord. As they did this, the glory filled the House and the priest could not minister.. God ministered. Minstrels, challenge yourself not to be ordinary musicians, but stand out in a place of corruption, perversion and complacency.. be a MINSTREL!!!

Hey Bryan: My name’s Wade Jewell and started playing on worship and leading in worship. I’m primarily a lead guitarist but also play bass and sing. I’ve been learning how to come into the presence while playing and allowing/asking the Holy Spirit to come and join with me. I do worship at a local church that puts on a Soup Kitchen and twice a week. They allow me to come and worship there in the mornings before they serve lunch. I’ve learned a lot about bringing the presence of God before even entering the church and being hot in Jesus’ presence before I get there.
A friend who was a worship leader for many years said that I was a chief musician. I’ve been a christian for some time now but I’m not familiar with musicians and what their call’s to ministry. When I was 19 I was chosen for musical ministry. I’m 38 now and just stepping into it. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you and all the blessings:)

pls could u kindly explain more in details on this-“Because if a minstrel is going to and from different houses, many times, sounds begin to blend, and the anointing of the minstrel drops. While the skill may increase, the anointing decreases because it is no longer concentrated in one particular place.” does it mean a minstrel cant be evangelistic??

    • pastorbryanmeadows

A minstrel can be evangelistic, but that should never take priority over loyalty, sonship, and accountability. Minstrels must guard against greed, and many times when you find a minstrel that plays at multiple locations, it’s not for the purpose of evangelizing, it’s because they are trying to make a living. This must be addressed. I am speaking more to those who lack commitment in their local church or don’t even have a local church or pastor. Minstrels shouldn’t be church hoppers or easily offended and church hurt. Minstrels should be stable. Look at David in Saul court!

    Hello Pastor Bryan!

I’m So happy to have been led to your site. My son is 17 and has a minstrel’s anointing. He plays acoustic guitar, writes music and songs. I’m continuously seeking God on how to guide him in growing in his gift and calling while protecting against the influence of the secular. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    • pastorbryanmeadows

      Yamaceeta,

Because your son is highly anointed, you do have to be careful that he remains in a great church, surround him with strong men of integrity, and with extreme honesty, expose the traps that are already laid for him. Because he is musical, he will be attracted to many different sounds (spiritual and secular), that’s okay.. Trying to protect him from secular music is impossible, but what you must guard against is a secular spirit or what is called, The Spirit of this Age. The spirit of the hireling and the bastard spirit! How do you guard against this? Make sure he serves and ministers with his gift first, and don’t allow him to get paid. This will purify his heart from greed, and teach him hard work! And also expose him as much as possible to other great minstrels. Allow him to get around those who have are functioning in this office, that’s a great place to start!

      • Yamaceeta

        Good morning Pastor Bryan,

Thank you so much. This is no coincidence….much confirmation and new revelation. I am grateful for your counsel, and will follow your instructions. Would you happen to know anyone walking in their minstrel call assignment in the DFW area who would be wiling to connect with him? My son’s name is Tre’. Please remember him as you pray for minstrels.

      • pastorbryanmeadows

I do not as of yet! But I could definitely get him connected with our music director. Please send your contact info to info@embassychurchatl.com
